Earl of Warwick

Earl of Warwick ist ein erblicher, britischer Adelstitel, der vier mal verliehen wurde und einen der angesehensten Titel Großbritanniens darstellt.

Inhaber

1. Verleihung (1088)

Der Titel Earl of Warwick wurde 1088 für Henry de Beaumont, 1. Earl of Warwick geschaffen, den jüngeren Sohn von Roger de Beaumont. Der Titel und das Lehen waren auch in weiblicher Linie erblich und die Earlswürde war traditionell mit Warwick Castle verbunden. Als der 11. Earl die Vererbbarkeit der Burg auf seine männlichen Nachkommen beschränkte, beabsichtigte er das gleiche vermutlich auch mit dem Titel.

Der 14. Earl of Warwick wurde 1445 zum Duke of Warwick erhoben, doch da er keine Söhne hatte, erlosch der Titel bereits ein Jahr später bei seinem Tod. Die Earlswürde hingegen fiel an seine Tochter Anne Beauchamp, 15. Countess of Warwick. Edward Plantagenet, 17. Earl of Warwick, wurde 1499 als Verräter hingerichtet und sein Titel wurde ihm 1504 formell aberkannt, weshalb die Linie erlosch.

2. Verleihung (1547)

Im Februar 1547 wurde der Titel neu geschaffen für John Dudley, 1. Viscount Lisle. Seine Hinrichtung im August 1553 ließ seine anderen Titel verfallen, doch die Earlswürde ging auf seinen ältesten Sohn John Dudley, 2. Earl of Warwick über und danach auf dessen Bruder Ambrose Dudley, 3. Earl of Warwick. Dieser starb jedoch kinderlos und der Titel verfiel erneut.

Schon wenige Monate nach dem Tod des letzten Earl of Warwick wurde der Titel für Francis Greville, 1. Baron Brooke neu geschaffen. Er war 1746 zum Earl Brooke of Warwick Castle erhoben worden. Der derzeitige amtierende Earl of Warwick ist seit 1996 Guy Greville, 9. Earl of Warwick.
